  Community Impact

United Way of Southeast Alaska is innovative.

We are the leader and catalyst for change in the business of caring. We do not rest on our laurels. We look for approaches that have not yet been taken. We explore alternatives and seek new ways to solve community problems. Invest in the United Way, and you invest in these community priorities:

United Way's Four Areas of Care
  Helping children and youth succeed

  • Enhancing the quality of childcare and mentoring services.
  • Involving youth in community service and leadership.
Supporting the elderly and people with disabilities

  • Coordinating mental, emotional, physical health and terminal illness services.
  • Helping people with disabilities lead active, productive lives.
  Promoting wellness and self-sufficiency

  • Working to increase the health and safety of women, children, families, and neighborhoods.
  • Providing education, counseling and assistance to individuals working toward self-sufficiency and freedom from substance abuse.
Meeting the basic needs of people in crisis

  • Organizing comprehensive health and human services for people in crisis.
  • Providing a "safety net" for those facing hunger and homelessness.

Community Building

How United Way Builds Community:

United Way of Southeast Alaska looks for opportunities -- in people, partners, emerging trends, community crises, and donor interests -- to advance the community's agendas for community impact.

We define community building as: the process of engaging diverse stakeholders, including residents and others, in sustained, collaborative, strategic efforts to strengthen and improve conditions in an identified geographic area. Community building may be neighborhood-focused, population-focused, issue-focused or a combination.

United Way of Southeast Alaska's Community Building Principles:

Build on the strengths of local individuals, associations and organizations
Focus on specific actions and measurable results to improve community life
Promote participation by people of all races, genders, ages and cultures
Ensure local decision making and ownership -- and decision-making processes and allow for quick action
Draw upon the resources of the larger community
Bridge all sectors to develop healthy children, families and communities
Share experience and knowledge to promote continuous community learning

Be the change.
