Community Impact

United Way of Southeast Alaska is innovative.

In the business of caring, we are the leader and catalyst for change. We do not rest on our laurels. We look for approaches that have not yet been taken. We explore alternatives and seek new ways to solve community problems. Invest in United Way and invest in the community priorities outlined below.

United Way's Three Areas of Care

Health

  • Working to improve the health and safety of women, children, families, and neighborhoods
  • Providing education, counseling, and assistance to individuals seeking self-sufficiency and freedom from substance abuse

Education

  • Enhancing the availability of quality childcare and mentoring services to promote early childhood development
  • Involving youth in community service and leadership
  • Focusing on reading at grade level by the end of third grade

Income Stability

  • Organizing comprehensive health and social services for people experiencing financial instability or crisis
  • Providing a "safety net" for those facing hunger and/or homelessness

Your Community Investment

Community Building

How United Way builds community:

United Way of Southeast Alaska looks for opportunities -- in people, partner agencies, emerging trends, community crises, and donor interests -- to improve its impact on community well being.

United Way of Southeast Alaska defines community building as: the process of engaging diverse stakeholders in sustained, collaborative, and strategic efforts to strengthen and improve conditions in an identified geographic area. Community building may focus on neighborhoods, populations, issues, or a combination of these.

United Way of Southeast Alaska's Community Building Principles:

  • Build on the existing strengths of local individuals, associations, and organizations
  • Focus on specific actions and measurable results to improve community well being
  • Promote participation from people of all races, genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds
  • Ensure local decision-making and ownership to allow for timely action
  • Draw upon the resources of the larger community
  • Bridge all sectors to develop healthy children, families, neighborhoods, and communities
  • Share experience and knowledge to promote sustained community learning

BE THE CHANGE.
