Coeur Alaska: LEARN UNITED Reading Tutor Program

Updated and Recruiting Now!

Juneau’s children and schools appreciate your interest in becoming a Reading Tutor.  Research shows the impact caring volunteers have in supporting kids in their reading development.  Children’s  self-esteem and their love of reading also grows.  Becoming a Reading Tutor is simple and fulfilling. The following is the simple process for you to review:

School Choice:

Harborview, Sayeik Gastineau, Riverbend or Mendenhall River Community School.

Time Commitment:

Ideally, 2 times a week for 30 minutes during the school day beginning January 18. We work with you to meet your preferred days and times. If you can only come once a week, we try and match you with another tutor. Most sessions happen during lunch or reading instruction time. This varies between each school.

Training:

There will be a training via Zoom in early January. If you can’t attend, we will send you the training to review. The Reading Specialist or AmeriCorps member will assist you at the school.

Signing Up:

The Juneau School District requires you to fill out an online application.

On the far left, lower down, one of the position types is volunteer. If you click on that, it opens up the position announcement, which includes red button that says "apply".

This takes approximately 20-30 minutes. We have a tutorial to assist you in navigating the process if you need support. Once you receive your acceptance email, we ask that you send a copy to readingtutor@unitedwayseak.org.

The fun begins:

Contact either by phone 907-463-5530 or email readingtutor@unitedwayseak.org, your preferences of school and time. Once the Coordinator creates a match for you, they will contact you with the required information you will need to know to begin your tutoring with your reading buddy.

Extra Information:

  • When you arrive at your school, you will be greeted by an AmeriCorps member or Reading Specialist – until you know the ropes.
  • If you know you will miss a session, please let the Reading Coordinator know.

Thank You!!!
