United Way of Southeast Alaska
2019 Sitka Day of Caring
In keeping with the spirit of Volunteerism in our communities, United Way of Southeast Alaska held its second annual Day of Caring in Sitka on Tuesday, September 17th. Local nonprofits were matched up with local businesses whose employee teams completed prearranged projects at the agencies. The participating businesses were GCI, SEARHC, and Wells Fargo.
The day began at 8:00 a.m. at University of Alaska Sitka Campus for an introduction and a continental breakfast. Immediately afterward, teams were dispatched to work on their assigned projects at Sitkans Against Family Violence, Southeast Alaska Independent Living, Alaska Fine Arts Camp, and Fortress of the Bear.
At Southeast Alaska Independent Living, volunteers from SEARHC went through and organized their lending closet.
At Sitkans Against Family Violence, volunteers from SEARHC performed important landscaping that included mowing, weeding, trimming bushes and even power washing.
At Alaska Fine Arts Camp, volunteers from CGI painted the outside of their buildings.
At Fortress of the Bear, volunteers from Wells Fargo, stripped bark off trees to be used in their new visitors center. They got to hang out around bears, and had so much fun other volunteers came by afterwards to help out.
All in all, 15 volunteers were able to get a tremendous amount of work done for four nonprofit agencies who serve the community of Sitka.
All of us here at United Way of Southeast Alaska would like to say a huge thank you to all the participating businesses, agencies, and all of the wonderful volunteers who came out for our fourth annual Sitka Day of Caring. We are looking forward to growing the event in the years to come.
